Resting Between Exercises:

The most important action “Between Exercises” while executing a correct fitness program to avoid getting hurt and get maximum results from your training each time is “rest.”  Correctly resting between exercises will replenish your energy, restore your breathing, allow your form to settle correctly and give you just enough energy to successfully continue to your next set.

Make sure that rest time between exercises doesn’t become siesta time

Incorrectly resting between exercises will cause your body to cool down and strain on your next set, compromise your form, corrupt your breathing, and sacrifice any possible results.  Some forms of the incorrect resting are as follows:

Incorrect Resting Practices:

  • Resting after each set
  • Resting to achieve heavier lifting
  • Resting more than 15 seconds between body part
  • Resting before exerting or before releasing the weight while performing a set
  • Resting for long periods of time while socializing instead of concentrating on the set
  • Resting between repetitions
  • Resting till the muscle gets cold

Proper resting between exercises will enhance your workout and avoid undue injury

Correct Resting Practices:

  • Less than 15 second’s rest.  If you need longer, it is because you have overstrained in your previous set and passed “The Point of Diminishing Returns” on that particular section of your fitness program.  You need to readjust your workout to allow for a comfortable 15 second or less rest between exercises without any stress or exhaustion.
  • Correct breathing will allow you to control the repetitions, the set, and the workout to allow for the correct resting period and to get oxygen throughout your body giving maximum benefits to your muscles.
  • Correct form will allow you to control the repetitions, the set, and the workout to allow for the correct resting period as well as help you avoid injury.
  • Correct concentration will allow you to control the repetitions, the set, and the workout to allow for the correct resting period as well as keeping correct breathing and stay away from injury.
  • Correct grip on the weights will allow you to control the repetitions, the set, and the workout to allow for the correct resting period and avoid future long-term damage to your joints, ligaments, and tendons.
  • Controlled velocity will allow you to control the repetitions, the set, and the workout to allow for the correct resting period and avoid accumulated rapid and impactful force against your joints, ligaments and tendons that cause future long-term damage to your body.
  • The correct number of repetitions, which is best accomplished by timing the set instead of counting the repetition, will allow you to control each repetition, the set, and the workout to allow for the correct resting period and help you keep within the Point of Diminishing Returns.
