The Difference Between Drugs and Nutritional Supplements

“The types of claims that can be made differ. Drug manufacturers may claim that their product will diagnose, cure, mitigate, treat, or prevent a disease. The FDA allows for such claims on drugs that have been approved by them. Such claims of prevention, cure, treat or prevent may not legally be made for nutritional supplements. (Even though in reality, they perform very effectively).” Hector Sectzer

In the assessments of risk associated with the intake of nutritional supplements we often see that such supplements are confused with drugs. Herbs and some vitamins or other supplements can cause damage if not taken correctly.

The compulsive behavior by people that believe that more is better or that a particular supplement is a “cure all” run into the danger of being unknowingly negatively affected by the supplement.

In Norway, regulations are in place to ensure that nutritional supplements are safe and reliably marketed.

Difference Between Drugs and Nutritional Supplements

Products in which the content of vitamins and minerals exceeds the maximum values defined by the regulations are classified as pharmaceuticals.

Nutritional supplements are intended as additions to the diet. However many people believe that they can eat any junk they want , take a given supplement and they will be healthy.

Try that with your car, put junk gasoline in the tank and then put an additive to improve performance and see how that fairs in the automobile’s performance. The supplement products should contain concentrated sources of vitamins, minerals or other substances with a nutritional or physiological effect. Nutritional supplements are regulated in detail by the applicable regulations (Kosttilskuddsforskriften-Supplement Regulations).

Nutritional Supplements are intended as additions to the diet.

Products containing vitamins in amounts that exceed the maximum limit are available in Norway, but these are classified as prescription-free drugs and are intended for use over a restricted period of time in consultation with a doctor for treatment of vitamin deficiency.

Vitamins are not made to be taken all the time unless there is a particular deficiency that needs to be constantly replenished.

Prevention doesn’t mean taking any vitamin randomly, or any illness prevention drug randomly so you don’t get the disease.

Vitamins and supplements are meant to be taken to balance your metabolism either because you don’t get enough necessary nutrition or you are constantly putting your system under some kind of arduous mental or physical activity.

Prescription-free drugs contrast with nutritional supplements, which are normally used as additions to the diet as necessary or due to a particular situation at times for a longer period of time. Unfortunately most people seem to be confused as what vitamins to take, when and why.

Is this a better system than in the USA?
